Question by San: What causes my Dell laptop to freeze and make a loud noise?

Lately, my computer freezes up a lot. The cursor stops moving and the screen becomes covered in vertical lines or little white blocks. When this happens, it makes a loud, repetitive ticking sound.

It just happens at random: sometimes during startup, sometimes right after I log on and sometimes while I’m using the internet or watching a video or something.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 and my OS is Windows Vista if that helps.
